Meet Split

Split is a RAM Promaster 3500 Extended. She is the largest size available at just shy of 21 ft in length. The Promaster, unlike all other American manufactured cargo vans, is front wheel drive, which unfortunately  means she can never be converted to a 4 x 4. She also has a 3.6L gasoline engine over the diesel option.

It took us six months to build Split from start to finish. We had no building experience so it was a slower than average process while learning on the job. Split is built from mostly natural wood and the walls and ceiling were built from reclaimed pallet wood. Looking back we may have chosen more lightweight materials.

Split has 400 watts of solar panels on the roof feeding a 420 AH battery bank. She also has a 3,000 watt inverter and 16,000 BTU furnace for those cold nights. We also added a van sized stove and oven, 3 cubic ft refridgerator/freezer, and a composting toilet. We have nearly all the comforts of a traditional sized home.

When it’s time to turn in for the night, Split has a nearly queen size bed that slides out on heavy duty drawer slides with a weight limit of 1,000 lbs! We can close the bulkhead door and shut the curtains to lock out the world and keep any light from showing through. She is very stealthy and allows us to blend in.¬†

We finished Split in the month of September, 2017 and immediately hit the road. So far life has been pretty comfortable. Our design proved to be extremely functional and there isn’t a whole lot we wish we’d done differently. We’re both so very proud of her and absolutely love showing her to those who are curious.
